Applied Musical Instruction for Voice, Piano, & Bassoon

Summer Music Camps & Programs
Applied lessons in your discipline are the single best way to make progress; however part of taking responsibility for your musical education is participation in additional, reputable musical ensembles. Organizations outside your school help push you to develop yourself as a musician and as a person. Please examine the links listed below and take some time to consider these ensembles as options for additional applied study. Each event has unique opportunities to offer... Get on the webpages, do some research, and assess the benefits of each.
Don't forget to check deadlines! They are often MUCH earlier than anticipated!!

Musical Opportunities in Michigan (East Coast)
Berklee College of Music Summer Programs, Boston, MA
Website: http://www.berklee.edu/summer/
This school offeres programs in disciplined study of both instrumental and vocal music, focusing on specific
Styles of performance. The school is widely respected for their high level of musicianship.
University of Michigan, Michigan Youth Ensembles, Ann Arbor, MI
Website: http://www.music.umich.edu/special_programs/youth/mye/
These ensembles rehearse on the University of Michigan campus on Sundays, so ensure you are able to make
that commitment! The faculty at this institution are respected world wide for their talents.
It would be a tremendous opportunity!
Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen, MI
Website: http://www.interlochen.org/
This school boasts both a summer camp as well as a full time boarding school The summer camps are outstanding and come with my highest recommendation for all areas (voice, musical theater, orchestra, etc.).
Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Muskegon, MI
Website: http://www.bluelake.org/
This camp offers summer camps for both vocal and instrumental in addition to programs for dance, theater, art, etc. They have strong two week programs and wonderful “study abroad” international ensembles. I recommend this camp for the beginning to intermediate musician, as no audition is required for acceptance and it can be a bit undisciplined. Be aware that they offer large scholarships for high scores at Solo & Ensemble and normal submissions!
BASSOON ONLY:
Metropolitan Youth Symphony, Birmingham, MI
Website: http://www.metropolitanyouthsymphony.org/
These rehearsals take place in Birmingham on Saturday mornings. They have two-three orchestras and they ALWAYS need bassoons! If you can commit to this, it’s an outstanding opportunity.
Oakland Youth Orchestra, Rochester, MI
Website: http://www.oyo.org/
This organization rehearses at Oakland University in Rochester/Auburn Hills on Thursday nights. Again, they have mutiple levels of orchestras and it’s a great opportunity.
Detroit Civic Youth Ensemble, Detroit, MI
Website: http://www.detroitsymphony.com/Pages,30,interact-civic-youth-ensembles-audition.aspx
A division of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, this ensemble is by far the most competitive and accomplished in the area. They have three orchestral divisions and the auditions are rigorous, but worth it. Definitely consider this as an option – they meet on Saturdays at Orchestra Hall in Detroit.
